Unknown Art Index est une archive numérique contenant des œuvres d'art d'artistes inconnus provenant de la collection du Metropolitan Museum of Art. Les objets dans cette archive vont de 3000 av. J.-C. à 1990 ap. J.-C. Chaque ligne est une entrée pour une œuvre, en format CSV (comma separated value). À partir des archives en libre accès mises à disposition par le Metropolitan Museum sur GitHub, Unknown Art Index utilise la blockchain pour transférer la propriété des objets d’art du Musée vers une adresse cryptographique unique : UnknownArtist.eth. Les entrées en surbrillance sont des hyperliens vers le jeton cryptographique créé pour cet objet.

Il existe une distinction entre deux types de jeton cryptographique : l’un est un fichier créé numériquement, l’autre est une archive numérique pour une objet physique. C'est à ce dernier que cette archive réfère. Cependant, une fois transformé en jeton, l'objet physique devenu jeton cryptographique est né numériquement, et sa provenance devient numérique : dans ce principe archivistique, l'objet n'a pas de passé physique.

Unknown Art Index est une œuvre archivistique expérimentale et spéculative qui imagine un monde où, dans le contexte de la blockchain comme technique d'archive, la valeur historique et monétaire des archives numériques surpasse celle de leur original physique.

Unknown Art Index is a digital archive containing artworks by unknown artists from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The objects in this archive range from 3000 BC to AD 1990. Each line is an entry for an artwork, in CSV (comma-separated value) format. Drawing from the open-access archives made available by the Metropolitan Museum on GitHub, Unknown Art Index uses blockchain technology to transfer ownership of the artworks from the Museum to a unique cryptographic address: UnknownArtist.eth. The highlighted entries are hyperlinks to the crypto token created for each object.

There is a distinction between two types of crypto tokens: one is a digitally created file, while the other is a digital archive of a physical object. This archive refers to the latter. However, once transformed into a token, the physical object, having become a crypto token, is digitally born, and its provenance becomes digital: within this archival logic, the object has no physical past.

Unknown Art Index is an experimental and speculative archival work that imagines a world in which, within the context of blockchain as an archival technology, the historical and monetary value of digital archives surpasses that of their physical originals.
